is there a free program which will give my guitar and bass a distortion effect?

Best advice would be to wait and get a pedal. Stick to well trusted methods. Frequently, Bassists find ‘gain type’ distortion undesirable, and prefer Octave or Flange effects, as raw distorted bass tends to create a blanket of white noise. Simpler still, buy a cheap practice amp with Lead/Clear channels and a knob that says Gain. It’s important to learn effects, pedal skills/combinations and amp settings, because live performance demands fluency with all the gear. If your guitar practice is getting good and your confident, always bear in mind that the music your making belongs on a stage, not in a bedroom. Good Luck and keep strumming, the rewards are great !
