I play guitar. I work in a hospital with psychiatric patients. We have a guitar in our unit. I play often, like some of them. Is magic. The music is so relaxing, but actually play an instrument and sing along with it is something even more powerful. He also played for my elementary school students during my 30 year career as a teacher. Talk about a great combination.
Playing guitar or any instrument, is very profitable. Yes, I have a lot of money playing professionally, but the real profits come from the creative experience and release tension catharsis of creative activity itself. I am never mad, angry, agitated, irritable (no pun), or sad, when I'm playing. My area of expertise is the blues. I am a composer, too. The complete pure joy performing on the songs you've written is almost as good as it gets in terms of overall human satisfaction. That can be compared with sex, but why everything has to reach for the imaginary bar? Not so.
Many people have said "if only" had learned to play. It's as if you need to take up when you're 14 (like me) or simply no possible way to succeed in it. What malarkey. Anyone with a desire to play, can play. The perfect time to learn something is when there is a will to do, no matter the age.
Me got into the guitar because of The Beatles. I got into the blues, because I found them and not vice versa. The guitar is such a universally versatile instrument. I prefer play acoustically, because it is so immediate and ultra-portable. No fuss, no muss. I have many guitars, and one is perfect for taking a plane many times that I I have done.
Despite being 59, I like playing guitar and writing songs more than ever. Conclusion: so can you. I'ma big fan of give back. I will show anyone what I know at the drop of a hat. Not that hard if you're willing to put some time teaching your brain muscles and how to navigate a pitch and 6 strings. Totally do-able at any age.
I feel fortunate to have found joy music and to express with my guitar and voice. And now, with the advent of YouTube and similar video services free, all you need is a video recorder cheaper and is on track to create something timeless for anyone to see when you give them the link. And people seem to find, by chance, which is also a very rewarding experience.
Talk about cost effective! If happiness and satisfaction could become gold, well … you know how it goes. However, I prefer to think of things as has already happened. I feel lucky to have this gift and share it with someone who can enjoy it. My biggest thrill is when my playing will inspire others to play. That's the biggest payday is not always.
