First Genius of the Electric Guitar
This 1941 instrumental was recorded by some fan with a portable disc recorder at Minton’s, a Harlem after-hours joint where jazz musicians jammed often after their regular gigs. I edited out a mediocre trumpet solo by a Joe Guy (John Doe?). On drums was the future bebop giant Kenny Clarke. Someone must have tacked the title “Swing to Bop” onto it years later, probably when it was first released …
