Great features guitarist?

I've been playing a little over a year. I'm self taught and intention to get more practice this summer. I was wondering what are some of the features and brands you see in a great guitarist.

My favorite guitarists are usually self-taught, that makes a bit more adventurous people who have studied formally and adhere to "rules." People who learn by themselves appear to be better in developing their own style of play characteristic of focusing on the theory and structure.
