Learn to identify what key a piece of music is in. If you can read music this is fairly easy, ITA because of the score, but if not (as most guitarists), you must use your ears. A moderately successful method of doing this is to listen the first chord and the last of the track-this is often the dominant chord. It is quite difficult to identify by ear alone, so that may require back down with his guitar and use trial and error until you find something on your own instrument that sounds the same.

Learning a form of pentatonic scale. Pentatonic scale only mean of five notes, and Dona't be afraid of the word as the scale is probably ita the easiest to learn. There are five ways to regulate the pentatonic scale, but for now only have to learn a form. Look in a book or Google or whatever, and once you have an idea of it, practice it by playing it back and forth again and again. This will improve both accuracy and muscle memory, and both are essential for lead guitar.

Learn to associate the form of scale you have learned with a key. Usually You can slip a pentatonic shape to different places on the neck so it sounds like you're in different keys. What do you do now is to find the position pentatonic which fits in the key of the song that worked in step one. This will probably be easier if you have a diagram of the guitar neck reference.

Play! So far weÂ've learned to identify the key of a piece of music, a scale associated with the same key, and also now we have found some cool licks in the key scale, now comes the fun part! We want to be able to put this all in a context of music, so the song was used in Step 1, play it on your stereo and try to adapt some of their licks found it using your own guitar.
