Can I play CDG’s on my laptop, free?

I play the guitar. I have played music with Willie Nelson, Merle haggard, George Jones and many others. Now I have a Karaoke disk, to play music along with.
Since I can’t hear or see the words, I can’t keep up.
Karaoke–tutor seems to indicate that I must buy a new CD-rom.
Since it is just a hobby, I don’t want to spend any money on this.
Is it possible to see the words on my laptop with free software only?

Try to use different media players to try and convert the files.
