electric vs acoustic guitar?

im 15 and about to get my first guitar i like grunge music like alice in chains and nirvana my mom says i should learn on an acoustic then go 2 electric now aic and nirvana have unplugged virsion of their songs (all acoustic) so i could learn that and whats the difffernce between nylon and steel string what do u think i should get. electric sounds eaiser but u have to mute strings and u need an amp and all of that acoustic u dont plz help me decide. and if u can can u tell me what strings r these its the guitar played by the guy with long hair http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEUmTDamjB0 thxs and if u do look and the video its a guild

He is playing a STEEL string acoustic guitar BUT it’s hooked up to an amp.

I’d start with an electric && tell your mom with an electric YOU CAN hook up head-phones … OOOOOHHHHH such a big selling point to parents who dont want to listen to you learn to play.

Tell her with an acoustic … you can NEVER play quietly,, there is only one volume, that at which you strum. An electric has 1-10 & headphones so she wont have to hear a thing. +++ Chances are you can get a cheap electric setup for the same price as a cheap acoustic & then you can upgrade one piece at a time.

As for nylon strings, the cheapest of the cheap guitars seem to always come with nylon when your looking at acoustics to start with I’d stay away from them, the worst thing you can do to yourself is get some 50$ guitar, it makes practice that much more painful.

That being said, nice nylon strings guitars are awesome. Called folk or classical guitars they usually have a larger neck the strings run up & are used for people who play with their fingers not a pick.

BUT the nylon strings can be put on any guitar and have a different tone when played. It’s still the same instrument, but the best way to get started && what nirvana and AiC uses is steel strings.

Electrics will be much easier and you don’t have to worry about string muting and stuff at first

Learn to play a song clean without distortion it will be just like an acoustic and then crank it up and in no time you will rock!
