how to age guitars

For me there are two main styles of teaching guitar,

  • Notation through a book tuitional
  • By method the favorite song

Learning Through the notation:
This is a common form of a large number of classical masters teach. The method involves teaching the fundamentals of music and notation first. Here is a shortlist,

  • parts of the guitar
  • sitting or standing
  • Pick farm
  • Finger Numbering
  • music staff
  • note names
  • bars
  • note values
  • compass
  • notation sight reading of the six String
  • read game view annotation in the six strings
  • playing songs from notation to a fluid phase

This method, the end is a great way to learn guitar, but from my experience is best suited for children under 12 years of age or adults who realize the importance of reading sheet music and rhythm lines. Anyway I think it only holds the attention of the average student 10 to 15 lessons before they want to learn popular songs or playlist.

A lot of new students coming to my classes who have always played before saying "I play very well but I do not know no music or notation. It seems a known fact that in reality do not have to be strong in the notation or music theory to play the guitar. Because of this guitar is a popular instrument to learn, and because of video clips and image of the rock band. I think a student learning the violin, cello, trumpet or any other classical instrument will be more focused on lessons and practice because they are aware of the regiment that comes with that instrument. Because of this rebellious behavior that comes with the guitar a lot of teachers use the learning method through favorite song. Thus the student remains more interested in the lesson program.

The learning method Favorite Song:
This is the most popular method of teaching, by far, both for students and teachers. A lot of teachers who know how to use this method, the main reason for this is because it gets fast results through a wide range of students. When starting a new lesson I will explain the two methods of learning and usually give them a choice on which path they would like to continue, in most cases will leave the decision up to me.

Election the proper method for the student:
Age is a major factor in the selection of teaching method. Generally we found that children primary school have little influence peer group when it comes to music. They like what they like and this usually stems from their decisions to parents of music. Therefore, they are easily influenced when it is a song that touches on guitar and happily practice what they are given. Children usually have to show a little more slowly and step by step, not missing a thing about how they will get confused. Also try to create some games they can play in the lessons, things like:

  • guess the shapes of chords
  • time to see how quickly they can change from one chord to the next
  • Memory card game using diagrams, photos, TAB notation of the same chords or notes
  • Personal note guessing game

I find some games on the internet and software learning tools that are useful.

  • Guitropolis: target = "_blank"> href = "http://www.guitropolis.com" target = "_blank"> www.guitropolis.com (using games software and lesson plans to learn from)
  • Net Music Theory (href = "http://www.musictheory.net/" target = "_blank"> www.musictheory.net is mainly for music theory, but has a couple of coaches who are helpful)

Because children under 12 years are a blank page, gives you more flexibility with teaching notation and some music theory instead of rushing to play popular songs immediately. The age limit is not a set of rules, but more of a guideline.

Some younger students, mainly want to learn guitar just for the image. The guitar, drums and singing are probably instruments more popular to learn simply by the fact that children are bombarded by videoclips, idol type shows and movies that show the style of rock & pop life. If we compare a student to play the clarinet and cello someone learning the guitar, there is a difference in attitude. Someone who is learning a classical instrument usually understand the learning process involved with learning rule for these types of instruments.

Global learning should be on the fun with the instrument so keep the lessons in a balanced level of the structure compared to the songs

About the Author:

My teaching philosophy is to encourage the interest and passion that my students have for music, by allowing them to learn the guitar through their favourite songs. There is no use in trying to force sight reading and music theory on a teenager who wants nothing more than to be in a band just for fun. I have always found music can only be successfully taught once someone has been playing for a little while, and they start to love the instrument. As they improve on the basics, their natural desire is to become better, and at that moment they realise they need to know (and most importantly, want to know) the theory they initially despised!
