How to stop the note from ringing on an electric guitar?

I’m learning a song, Good Riddance by Green Day, on my electric guitar, but when I play, the previous notes I play, ring out into the rest of the notes, and makes it sound horrible. Is there a way to make the notes more marcatto or stacatto, or at least dampen the ringing?

just turn off any distortion that you may have on and then they should sound fine
and if that doesnt work then just try touching each string after u pick it with your thumb of your picking hand lol
